Maya VS. XSI???

Forgive me if this is blasphemous (sp?) but can anyone tell me what the true differences are between Maya and XSI - like - why is Maya $2 grand and XSI only $500...
Is Maya used WAY more than XSI out in the working world? Does Maya do cooler stuff?
I have the free download of each but my system (graphics card) will only let me do limited things in Maya... should I spend the money to build up my system to then go out and buy a $2000 program or should I stick with XSI and blunder my way through the seemingly few tutorials that are out there?
