Very nice arran. I would put some spec highlights on the wings to give them some shape or something like that. I love those paint fx hairs...never played with that myself.

cheers - minstrel. user added image

the wings are actually curved so at a better angle and something underneath them, the spec should show up better. i need to do a lot more work on their texture maps as well as they are still a bit pixelly in places. i'm also hoping to get some iridescence on them as well. i already added a bit to the eyes.

bit of an update. have been adding some more fur, paint fx and playing with facing ratios on his shaders.

Looks pretty sweet arran.
I think if you use a leather texture on the wings mapped on the specular ,transparency and translusency map, it will be better for it.

Hey Arran, I like this a lot,

facing ratio's are what makes your shader change colour depending on it's angle towards the camera?

my two crits are that the legs are a bit too hairy and if you are going for this green fat really disgusting fly I think the body is usually a more reflective, almost like a car.

I've attached an image so you get a better idea of what I meant.

Facing ratio's are awesome, I think I use them for pretty much every material!

cheers guys! user added image

farbtopf: yeah i agree, it definitely needs to be more reflective and the legs are too hairy lower down - though i'm intending to make the fur on the top a bit longer. cheers for the pic.

i'm using a layered texture with a color map and a ramp to make it go blue toward the edges and one for transparency - i don't think i have it right yet though. this is my first time using facio ratios and yeah, they seem pretty awesome!

mastone - yeah - the wings need a lot of work - i'll give your suggestion a go.

Coming along nicely.

You might want to play with the lighting a bit to really bring out the facing ratio to tune it right up as per farbtopf's ref, look really good when its done!

What you ging to do with him in the end, as he might be a bit out of place with in your office!

thanks.

yeah - i'm not happy with the highlight - i added a map to the spec with a tint of yellow - but it needs work.

no flies in my office...just cockroaches. i was planning to put him on the leaf from a couple of pages back, but the leaf texture was looking kind of crap when i got in close.
