Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Just add some lights to your scene and a ground plane. Then in the shadow section of the light, turn on Depth Map shadows. That's it. Do get the shadows as crisp as the image you posted, you may need to bump up the Dmap resolution. From there, the Maya docs should help you fine tune them.

Using raytraced shadows will also produce crisp shadows, but it require you to turn on Raytraced shadows for the light, and turn on raytracing in the render globals (this increase render time tho)
