Light not passing through translucent material?

Hi all,

this is a problem I have. The object itself is lit (it's a lampshade, with a point light inside) but no light hits the objects outside. I've tried the mia material and a normal blinn, to the same efffect. I'm using GI and FG.... I've tweaked the raytrace depth, photon trace depth and all else I can think off.

I'll post an image up tomorrow... but for just now does anyone know what is going on here? Surely this must be a common use of a material, to have light passing through it and illuminating objects on the other side (lampshades, windows etc).

thanks,

gubar

Have you tried playing around with the material transparency or translucent channels?
Hey..what about the option of having the lamp shade glow the colour of the light?

hi,

yeah I've tried tweaking them both. Here's a couple of renders, the first with no shadows, the second with raytraced shadows.

As you can see, when shadows are on, no light passes through the shade, though it is lit itself.

Anyone know what the problem is here?

thanks,

gubar

i'd recommend creating a 2nd light, and turning off the light linking to the shade so it can light the rest of your scene.

if you're trying to get the color from the shade to be cast upon the environment, you'd usually achieve that effect by mapping something similar looking to the color.

just cause that's how it works in the real world doesn't mean you're not allowed to cheat in the 3D world...
