Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Hard body objects and soft normal issues

Hi,

here is a pull up bar that I am modeling. I have been attatching the parts together, with a slight bump, to simulate the weld points.

The problem I have is that the surface no longer appears smooth. Where the lines are, there are new edge loops (to allow me to join the objects) but they are all still completely planar, so the surface is still completely flat. I have tried unlocking, averaging and then smoothing the normals but no luck. I'm sure I've seen this discussed and solved before and it must be a common problem - can anyone help?

thanks,

gubar

no sure what u mean... if its what i think just select the edges and go to normals > harded edges.

Hi,

What I mean is, the vertical slat is shaded as if it is not a flat surface, there is a bump in the middle. But the surface is entirely flat.

Managed to fix it by adding in more edge loops around where the parts join, though I'm sure there must be another way.

cheers,

gubar
