Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

Building a City

Hi!

I have some real-live-footage with a horizont. In the horizont is nothing. I want to build a City in Maya for the horizont. Is there any way (script) in Maya to build a City. I tried to build every single house and duplicate it but it doesn't look very good. If someone has a few tips, please let me know user added image

Thanks!

Build every single house but make a few subtle changes on each duplicate

Thank you for your quick answer!
Wow, sounds like a lot of work... is there no faster way?

By the way: I need a cool looking moving sky, too... do you know a tut or something for maya?

greets!

Why not do a matte painting instead, if its on a horizon the less detail will be needed, so a few block of paint with a slight hint of detail is all you'll need to do.

Scripting and modelling it would be just ridiculous. Have a look on google of how cities sit on the horizon or anything for that matter, they are virtually detail free, just photoshop a test together and see how it fairs in the comp, also check out a real cool tute by Christian Lorenz Schurer on matte painting...you'll kick yourself after

It basically is a painting you use in the background(i don't know the technical definition )
And i agree with Jay use a Matte painting,it's quicker then building an entire city in 3D

Thank you all for your help!
OK I understand the definition of matte painting and I tried a few things in photoshop with a frame of my footage. But what does it help me, doing a cool matte paint for the frame? I have a moving footage in the end...

well how much does the horizon move? If its that distant then there'll be no parallax

Jay meant that if your background is far away of the object in your animation the background doesn't have to be animated
