Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

barrel wire frame:

The grooves are still a bit too rounded, need to add either edge loops or some creases:

Bit of an update. The cylinder that I have added has been a bit problematic but I think it's nearly there. Started to block in the handle, which will be detachable to be replaced by a scope.

This is looking sweet!

Be careful with your Geo and the smooth mesh preview.
It may look sweet, but be careful it doesn't mess up your base Geo!

keep up the good work!

Cheers mayaniac,

I've read about issues with the smooth mesh preview, but after using it day after day for since the launch of 2008 I've yet to see it distort a base mesh - could it be that it's been fixed by a service pack or something?

I thought it just created a viewport preview of your poly mesh without altering the original at all (if you render for example you'll see that the base mesh is still there)?

Something I should perhaps look into more,

thanks man

Same as you mate, Ive used it since the day it came out, never had a problem with it. Ive also not heard of any problems with it either.

I think whay Mayaniac means is dont use it as a main modeling tool as if you move something in the smooth mesh preview you have to move it quite a bit and when you go to the base its distorted, but as long as you make a decent underlying mesh and use it for small tweeks (smoothing areas etc ) and as a mesh preview there no problem, which is common sense to someone who has used maya for a bit.
