Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Nice one man, funny... you don't see a lot of dog projects, but yours is looking in good form so far man. Keep on it mate... some people are quite far ahead, but still plenty of time. user added image

You gonna rig him yeah? Would look well cool in a 'playful' pose, like front paws outward, chin quite close to the floor with dog looking upwards at you. Kinda as if you were going to throw a ball or something?

Cheers m8. Its not been easy, but Steve (gster) has been a great help with advice user added image.

I want his head up as if he is looking at you, and one paw up as if he is asking for something. This is something one of the puppies do.

yeah - I definately agree about the legs - and also his ribcage is looking a little small.

Good job so far, but I would spend a bit more time on the modelling stage before rigging.

Agreed.

The front legs are the ones that are too thin at the top, the back is ok imho. They keep growing so fast so I'll pass a piccy if them when I started this.

The crotch looks a bit high to me but i guess its the age of the puppy before he/she has developed bigger muscles.

cool, looks great... only crit i would have to say is smooth out them hard edges/lines and also the nose hole, looks abit too pushed in and flat.

also another thing with the front two legs joint, you know how you have the knee joint, middle joint and the heel/foot joint... is the middle one needed?

don't be so hard on yourself mate - this isn't looking too bad at all. I think the main thing that is letting this down at the moment is the body- you really need to work on getting the ribcage massed in - the widest point should come out further than the legs and the chest area looks like it should be a little lower. Also, his back is looking far too flat at the moment . There should really be a curve to the back, with a dip towards the rear.

Keep going with this mate - your making good progress.

Hey man,

Think its starting to come together now. just smooth the edges on the legs a bit and maybe make the eyes bigger to get the puppy dog look.

think your at the make or break point, lots of tweeking for little instant reward if you know what i mean, if you sitck at it youll get it, just need to keep going at the low poly level (with a proxy on the other side to see what your going to get)

cheers

Steve

Yeah, dogs can be fustrating to model. All I can suggest is keep practicing. Body topology is a hard thing to master.

Cheers for a great entry! user added image
