Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

CGTalk Challenge Concepts

Well! I have to get moving on my Challenge work so I started to sketch some small assasin/attack droids that would wreak havok by disabling enemy installations and ships before concerted assaults. oooo sounds flash. Here is some small sketches and I splashed some colour on one quickly in Photoshop to see what it would look like. Hmmm not bad but I need to further work on my concept.

Pony! Yeah I know what you mean about the updates. I am on it now as I had the old pre-competition jitters and could not get a good concept and I have been also stuck doing a website for a mate.
Will be uploading some more solid sketches tonight!

Damn! Have you ever started a project and it just does not want to come together? I'm really struggling with this one for some reason. I will keep posting updates and I just have to work through the problem.
I am not sure if I like the droids head to be honest. Here is another (clearer) sketch of the guy I did last night. I wanna get onto the modeling but I want to make sure that he is right before I start.

I think "Ant" when i see him. Is the look you are going after?
Thought of "Atom Ant" on the first one, only modernized if i am making sense.

Good feel tho.

Atom Ant! Ha ha! Yeah I can see that t3logy. I was wanting a little guy that is fast and black.
I like this guy and will develop him a bit more perhaps in another project but I have changed tact once again. I felt that I needed something more sinister and classic. So here is the concept that I think I am going to run with.
I sketched this guy really roughly and then bought the sketch into Illustrator. Worked it up and then smoothed it out in Photoshop. The character feels stronger so now I will spec him up in profile for a tracing template so I can model him in maya. Will keep you posted.
Feedback is most welcome.

and here I was rooting for the "odds against aspect/humor in the sitation" of the challenge. Didn't mean to slay my "hero" with the ant comment.

The lethal pauma oozing malignant intent is awesome too.

Hey t3logy

Thanks for your feedback and you are not responsible for atom ant's demise. Heh heh! That is a good name for the little fella.

I will be hopefully uploading the image plane reference tonight - Yeah I know it is just another pict but I have to get it right before I start modeling.

Hey thanks Mike!
Well here is the possible image plane reference. Here pussy pussy! heh heh! I have not decided if I like the "bat" ears or not. Any comments would be welcome.
Now I have to work out how to make this sucker... Back to the T-rex Dvd by Kurt. If you don't have it, get it!!! (SPAM) haha!

Ahhh Grasshopper
All will be revealed...
My philosophy is that everyone has seen the big spaceship and the grand space scene before so I am going to take a risk to try and be a little different.
If it fails miserably, I still have a cool cat droidy thingy heh heh! You are right tho! Lots of work!

ok, here is the latest progress with the head basically modeled. I am still working on it improving detail and proportions but I thought I would post this for some feedback. Cool!

Thanks Rubber Chicken
I'm working on the head a bit more. I'm thinking that it is almost there unless anyone has some suggestions... I will be working on the ear next. I have also included a shot of the wire if anyone is interested. excuse the seam in the middle. I'm to tired to merge the sucker.
