converting from sud divisions to polygons

Hi folks,

I'm modeling a character which I 've just converted to a sub division surface.I then converted it back to a polygon object using the modify>convert subdivisions to polygons option which placed a polygon proxy cage beneath the subdivision surface. This method makes the mesh quite cluttered making it difficult to select vertices and edit.

Is there a way of changing from sub d's to polygons so that the resulting polygon mesh is clean and uncluttered ie the way it was at the very begining before it was converted to subdivisions.

any help would be very appreciated

To correct this whole mess, turn off the per vertex.
