small but annoying thing in maya

hey guys..
i just got into maya and modeling.. im just starting from the beginning making some simple household stuff..
im doing a Can at the moment, and i just have something that kind of annoys me...
when im in persp view.. and i want to select some vertices that are right in front of me... it also selects the vertices on the other side of the object or can in this case. it gets kind of annoying. and im wondering if there is an option to turn that off..
thx

go into your custom polygon display and turn backface culling on then it hides everything that is pointing away from the camera

make sure you have the object selected when you turn it on and it will hide all the backfaces from the viewpoint
