Default Motion trail makes no sense

I've noticed that the motion trail I've created for my animated object is not really tracing out the exact path taken by the object. At some points the object (pivot) and the motion trail points seem to line up but at other places in the animation I start to get a big gap between the object (pivot point, centre) and the points on the trail.

anyone shed any light?

Also, is there any way to just see the KEYS on a motion trail and not just the object's position at regular frames?

thanks
