Default Rendering in passes?

Does any one know how to render a 3d object in Mental Ray and in Render passes?

I have a picture frame made in Maya and I am going to put it in Shake to composit e my project. And I was told to render the 3d element in passes. Does anyone know how?

Any help would be great.
Thanks.
