Hey Pbman, looks cool. I found a tutorial that might be usefull to you for making the fluidy effect. You may have already seen it. Anyway, hope it helps

For the bloodcell shading, you might want to start with a sampler info node (facing ratio) > (blender) blender node (output) > (outColor) blinn. The items in parentheses are attributes for each node and it's placement basically shows where it gets plugged in. This network will give you an x-ray/electron microscope effect. Here are a couple links to get you going with it. The 2nd link will explain it better and show screenshots of the networks.
