Beer glass scene creation
This course contains a little bit of everything with modeling, UVing, texturing and dynamics in Maya, as well as compositing multilayered EXR's in Photoshop.

What books to buy?

Hi

Iv'e been using maya now as part of my college course in the UK, for a little over a year and a half. My skills are not to bad, they are higher than a begginer, but not much i would think.

I have been looking on amazon.co.uk for books and im not sure what to buy, because if i buy the begginer ones i could be just going over what i already know, and if i get the higher advanced ones then i might have problems.

Can anyone recommend some good books that assume the basics and build on that, so between indimediate and advanced, if possible from amazon.co.uk, i just have everything all ready to buy from them all ready. Thanks for anyones advice.

First up would be Game Artists Guide to Maya by SM's own Michael McKinley. Really good, very easy to follow and covers a little bit of everything. He has another book out which I haven't read yet  , but I imagine it's definitely worth getting too.

Foundation from Alias- I thought it was pretty good. A few mistakes, but covers a lot and is pretty fun and easy to follow.

Definitely recommend Stop Staring. It's a little heavy, but really covers doing a head and it's a good read.

Last Jae Jin Choi. A little confusing, but still good.

Hope that helps. And don't forget to check out the simply maya tutorials.

Man I agree with everything but that book.

It sucked I use it to hold my laptop of the base of the table. Very confusing and very hard to follow, but I did like the section on the mouth shapes and muscles.

I read all the other all the time.(apart of mikes - which I don`t have yet)

Another good book was this

Game Character Development with Maya (New Riders)
link

Which I picked up from siggraph, read on the plane back and followed very quickly when I got home.

I also read the art of rigging vol 1,2 and 3 a lot.
They cover all things a rigger will need as well as a few extras like hair, fur, cloth and matt painting.

cgtoolkit

my graduation prez from my mum (She didn`t think of getting me them while I was in uni user added image )

But on a whole I find video tuts the way to go - as long as they are not boring ( **gnomon**)
