Super noob problem: Merging vertexes

Hey all, I very recently started using maya and I'm trying to model a shoe- the problem is that I don't have an edge loop going cleanly around the whole thing, in the back the edges just stop (shown in the picture attached). How would I go about connecting them in a way that doesn't make the geometry all messed up?

Split polygon tool, or in 2013 it's interactive split polygon tool. Just click on a vertex then move the orange thingy over to the other one and click then hit enter. You'll see when you try it.
