Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

How can I change visibility of certain faces?

Hello there,

My apologies if this is in the wrong section, I wasn't sure where to post it.

Lately I've been trying to figure out how to control the visibility or transparency of certain faces on a mesh.

Currently, I've got a sphere with 4 cylinders branching off it in multiple directions and I want to be able to control the visibility or transparency of the faces on the sphere where the cylinders overlap it because I will be applying a glass material to the sphere and cylinder later on and I would like it to look seamless.

Originally I was thinking this could be easily solved with Backface Culling but when I turned it on it didn't seem to make a difference.

I'm not sure if this is something that would need to be scripted or not.

Ideally, I'm trying to figure out a way to easily keyframe the visibility or transparency of certain faces on an object.

If anyone has any tips or suggestions I would really appreciate it.

Thank you

you can assign materials to individual/multiple faces as well as to whole objects.
and you can set keyframes on the transparency of the materials you apply.

is it more of an on off transparency operation, or a fade? if you have uvs set up well enough for the object/s you could you use a texture to control the opacity....

a screen grab or two would help show what you want to achieve...

Here's a screenshot of what I'm trying to achieve:

There is a sphere at the center of every box control and the cylinders rotate around the spheres, so it would take forever to manually keyframe the transparency of certain faces on the 16 spheres I have in my scene.

Is there possibly a way to automate this process based on camera position or based of the face normals or something like that?

Hope this helps to understand it a little better
