Maya Dongal advice

Ok guys. I am getting Maya 5. I am thinking of getting Maya with dongal. Is there any drawback you can point out with regard to getting the dongal version?

Only drawback is you could lose or break the dongle. Otherwise, there are no real drawbacks. Having a dongle does make it easier to migrate from one system to the next, though.

But if the dongal stays at home. Then I doubt I will break it.
Out of curiosity what happens if someone breaks it ? Do you have to pay for a new one or do you have to buy Maya all over again?

It's a piece of hardware that attaches to the computer that a program will not run without detecting first.

This may sound dumb...but whats the point of that. Is it for security?

Yeah, it's for security, and more importantly, for pirate-protection as well.

The original idea for a "Dongle" from what I understand was so if a "friend" were to give you a copy of the software, you would not be able to use it without having a physical dongle attached to your machine.

The way dongles usually work is, like mike said,
-Upon opening the software, or when the software makes any command, the program would check to see if there is a hardware "loop-back" or dongle present, then if that returns true, the command is executed, else the software becomes inoperable.

Like danny said, it works well if you wanna have a liscence running at home, and at another location, so you could install the software at home and at work, (in this example), then just take the dongle with you to whichever location you wanna work.

And while you are away, if you take the dongle with you, those evil folks that wanna use the software, will not be able to.
...tho this does not stop them from harming your filesuser added image

I personnaly don't like the dongle version, but that's meuser added image

The reason I don't like dongles is because, for example, I used to have to "piggy-back" them so I could run Maya, Commotion, and my inkjet printer all in the same series.... my machine didn't fit against my wall anymoreuser added image
hehe... 2 dongles, and a printer cable attached... whew... what an ugly mess..

Hey guys, please remember that the dongle is an extra option that costs more money. It is only supported on the Windows platform
