How do I make my own bump-map?

I use photoshop to draw a black and white picture, save it and try to use it for a bumpmap on a material- but it won't load! Is there a certain size it needs to be?

If it was saved as a jpg, make sure it's not saved Progressive. Maya doesn't seem to like progressive jpgs.

Also, Maya doesn't always like material files with spaces in the name.
