Get a look at the massive amount of work that went into Sony Pictures Animation and Imageworks Smurfs: The Lost Village. This is the third film in the series, for which the studios have gone back to the roots of Peyo and done a complete reboot. The artists have looked at the original illustrations and created a world for modern audiences, ensuring that every element is to scale with a smurf sized perspective.

This has been done by modeling and texturing all the trees and plants, making sure that they’d stand up to being close to the camera and being viewed from very low angles. Collections of forest objects were taken and grouped into clumps that could be dropped into any sequence. The effects team finished off the look by populating the ground with mosses, clover, grasses and vines.
