This week fifteen students have been voted as winners of the Student Academy Awards, which provides a platform for global emerging talent to showcase their work within the industry. The competition, which has been running since 1972, has five categories – Alternative, Animation, Documentary, Narrative, and Foreign Film – with three winners selected in each.
The Academy received a record number of entries this year with 1685 films from 375 different colleges and universities. Check out the very impressive work by the three winning films for animation below. Previous winners in this this category include Pixars’ Pete Docter and John Lasseter.
The medal placements of gold, silver and bronze will be announced in an awards ceremony on September 17th at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, CA. This event is free and open to the public, so if you’re in the area tickets can be found here.
Taking the Plunge
“Taking the Plunge” was created by Nicholas Manfredi, Elizabeth Ku-Herrero, Thaddaeus Andreades and Marie Raoult at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York. This animated short film made in Maya tells the story of how a young mans’ wedding proposal is put in jeopardy and he’s forced to dive into unknown waters to salvage his plan.
