new laptop

my old one burned out :D
My video card just burn ...

So i'm planning to buy

HP 6830s

Pentium Dual Core(2.2GHz,800MHz,)

3GB (2+1GB (DDR2-800 MHz)

320GB SATA (5400rpm)

17"

1440 x 900

BrightView

512MB ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3470

DVD Super Multi drive DL

Wireless 802.11a/b/g/N, Bluetooth

battery : 3 h

It is second hand and it's about 400$...

I don't have any money than those 400$ so is this a good choice or not... I never used ATI ...

Advices ?

murambi 02-07-2010 06:26 PM

hey im guessing you still have your old monitor so i would suggest you get a cheap ati 100 dollar graphics carsd ati radeon hd 4830. get the e2180 processor for 50 dollars(stock speed is 2.0 but can be overclocked to 3.0 with the original fan) and the rest can be spent on motherboard and ram:) laptops are nothing but a waste of money

ColdWave 02-07-2010 06:58 PM

I need laptop coz i travel alot from the place i study in the uni to my hometown... so i need laptop for sure...

Give some suggestions... ?

murambi 02-07-2010 08:26 PM

for that amount a good laptop that can handle maya is very hard to find let me do some more research ill let you know

gster123 02-07-2010 09:16 PM

Ive got a Dell M6500 (probably the best laptop available for Maya on the move), I used to have a XPS and that ran Maya no probs, not too sure of the second hand price though.

That looks pretty good, though don't expect it to be amazing, it should do the job but may get pushed very hard in a year or so.

Ozgalis 03-07-2010 01:22 AM

I have a laptop close to that, had 2 gigs of ram not 3 and a 256 video card...so far it works fairly well, sometimes if I let the history build up a little to long it bogs down and I have to restart Maya and it renders slower than I would like but those are my only complaints. I am not all to experianced though so it may be different for you, good luck.

murambi 03-07-2010 06:11 AM

wow steve dont think thats anywhere near his price range

Hence why I recommenced a second hand XPS and commented on the HP.

Got to say though the M6500 is a bloody great bit of kit! Just need to upgrade the ram to 16 gig!

murambi 03-07-2010 05:58 PM

damn i upgraded recently and have 8gb of ram which is way more than i am used to(had 4gb ) i think that much ram wolud make me careless and less efficient with optimising my scenes

thought your budget was 400 bucks for 1000 dollars you could easily get a mac book pro way superior battery life

Really? http://store.apple.com/us/browse/hom...co=MTAyNTQzMzk
And on top of that they tend to be a little more outside of the US

that's some really funny rounding you got going on there murambi, i'd say based on coldwave's first choice at $400 and extra $200 is a massive difference

i dont think there's much wrong with the toshiba, despite it's small battery life

ColdWave 05-07-2010 10:55 PM

nah ... i paid my bills and now i have only 300$ so i'm going for Core 2 Quad and changing my Signe core 3Ghz Celeron...

So basicly i'll have

Core 2 Quad
1GB RAm
256 Nvidia 7600
And my OLD monitor :D

:headbang:

gster123 06-07-2010 07:45 AM

I would really try to up the RAM if you can ASAP 1Gig is going to crawl.

if you are going for a cheap process get the q8400 its about 200bucks and the remaining on an extra 2gb ram stick

ColdWave 06-07-2010 05:28 PM

I found on ebay : Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 Yorkfield 2.5GHz 6MB L2 Cache L for 160$ bucks
And i can get 2 GB of ram so i'll have 1+2GB = 3GB

that's good ?

gster123 06-07-2010 05:49 PM

Wheres the 3 gig coming from? If its 1 gig from your old PC, yor best of checkingthat its compatable with the new motherboard, if your current PC is quite old then it probably wont work.

ColdWave 06-07-2010 06:01 PM

It supports 4GB of ram.
I have 1 , and i'll buy +2GB.
1 GB on single Chip + 2GB on single chip

I have 2 DDR2 slots...

gster123 06-07-2010 07:10 PM

Yes but the 1 gig stick that you have may not be compatable with the motherboard that your getting, if the processor is a different family, i.e a pentium 4 to a quad core, then there is probably a massive difference in speed and technology.

If you mean that your getting the 1 gig machine and then buying 2 gig extra, again amke sure that the memory is compatable, mathcing memory speeds to the motherboard (and each others) gives a big perfomance boost.

Also if your getting PC with 4 DIMM slots then you may have 4 DDR2 slots so you have 2 pairs in dual channel.

ColdWave 06-07-2010 07:13 PM

I already have motherboard and everything i'm just buying a CPU and RAm..

I have Foxconn G31MX , and it has
2x 240 pin DIMM slots...

gster123 06-07-2010 08:50 PM

You will get more of a performance boost matching the 2 ram sticks rarther then sticking a 2 gig and a 1 gig in there.

I would get 2 matched RAM sticks rarther than mixing them.

Sorry I thought you had more DIMM slots than 2.

murambi 08-07-2010 09:54 PM

hey guys just checking the core i7, what im not understanding is whether they are 8 processors or is it four processors with hyper threading and what kind of processors do Apex boxx machines use

gster123 09-07-2010 06:51 AM

I'm not too sure if Boxx still do the APEX systems, when they did they ran with 6 core AMD processors as they were before the intel processors.

The i7's run with 4 actual cores but with hyperthreading they have 4 extra virtual cores making it 8 cores that the OS uses.

Everything is good except the videocard i don't have a clue about those cards... ??

i5- 430m, 4GB DDR3 will do a very good job for my CG work.

I have about 600$ so i can afford it..

I'm negative about the video card @ the mo ...
And the Gateway are not so good laptops but better than Acer

gster123 10-08-2010 07:17 AM

Its got an intergrared graphics card = uselsss for your CG work.

murambi 10-08-2010 01:49 PM

anyone here used the amd phenom x6. its about 300 bucks cant wait for intels responce to this its been almost 4months

ColdWave 10-08-2010 11:27 PM

Suggestions for laptop for about 600$ - 650 $ which can be useful :?

gster123 11-08-2010 08:32 AM

I think that you will struggle with that budget for something to run Maya well.

Maybe look into a second hand.

murambi 12-08-2010 12:36 AM

i think the laptop you suggested is pretty good provided you can change the gpu later on with a second hand gpu for about 60usd

anyone know where i can get cheap ddr2 ram it seems to have really sky rocketed back here home

Chirone 12-08-2010 06:04 AM

coldwave, from what i'm told generally the only replaceable things in a laptop is the RAM and harddrive (unless it's one of those newer macbooks with the uni bodies, which makes replacing parts impossible)

murambi, dont know any places with ddr2 ram

You won't be able too unless the case can take it. To put it quite bluntly, with a laptop your stuck with what youve got with regards to GFX. The motherboard may not be configured either. Bog no no unlessyou know exactly what your doing (I replaced a 7900 GTX with a 7950 GTX when it went pop in a dell XPS)

Chirone - Newer ones you can replace everything (or at least in the dell line up), CPU, RAM, GFX, Motherboard etc but due to the nature of cramming all the bits in and cooling the buggers a lot of parts (like the GFX cards) come with custom cooling parts on to distrubute the heat, and are a pain in the arse to do due to the space (or lack of it)
