View Full Version : No school like old school - 66 Vette
Here's the early stages of my latest effort ...
Roughed in
Final shell (minus a couple of tweaks) front ...
Refined clay. Pretty much time to start splitting panels off!
A little more refinement and now headlights ...

the models realy looking good MrR
I like the unusual shape of it, have you made the headlights so they can rotate up or are they going to stay shut?
keep posting the updates.
As I don't do this for a real job and I'm away on business at the moment, there'll be a bit of a delay to the next update.
Headlights will stay where they are for now. Once I get the thing looking semi finished, I'll start adding details like rotating headlights etc. It'll depend on how quickly I get bored with the model. Will try to stick with it!

I hope you don't get bored... I'm really liking the way it's going. It's strange how I've never really been interested in cars, till I started learning Maya. I really like 3D modelled cars, they look really smart. Hope to get to work on one myself pretty soon.
Keep up the good work.

good work Mr R.
looking forward to seeing some more progress on this. It would be cool if you could model some of those cool interior details as well.

Hoping to! Time - such a precious resource.
Guys I need a little help. I'm having trouble with hardening some edges as I split panels off. Rather than post again, here's my issue -
http://forum.simplymaya.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22744
This isn't the actual model but a simple mesh I created to repro the problem.
Help appreciated!!!

Hi MrR,
Thats some nice modeling there hope you solved your panel
problem, one question are you going to create the tyre bump
if so have you already sourced your templates.
the reason I asked I,ve done a 457 on Simplylightwave
got hold a close font of bfgoodrich for tyre wall but could not
source any profiles from anywhere for the bump.
Thanks again Ribs

Hi Ribs
I'm not sure how I'll attack that just yet. I'm probably going to do white wall tyres with the original knock-off rims.
I usually model the tread on tyres and use an app like CorelDraw or Illustrator to do the side wall bumps from scratch.
Also - forgot to post the other pic last time.

Hey marlonjohn
I'm pretty much doing this - http://www.cg-cars.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15
You'll need to register with the website to get at it though.
I can't say that one specific tutorial led to success. I think it's a combination of techniques from the Apache tutorial, looking at work by others, Kurts dragon tutorial (believe it or not) and just practicing and getting it wrong a lot.
The best advice I can give you is to start really rough and just block in the major features. Try to think ahead and place verts so that they'll help you as you add more detail. Lastly, I make use of curves to keep things smooth. If I'm going to split some polys, I draw a curve with the ep tool and snap to the existing verts. Then the new verts created by the split can be aligned with the curve. See image ...
This is just a simple example but hopefully explains it.
I've gone away from subds because I can't get the edges as tight as I'd like. Instead I use really close edge loops and a mesh smooth.

A small update. Grill and bumper in. The side window is there but needs more tweaking. Will update again soon.

thats a sweet looking car
ohan thats a very clever tip on the curve an verts
OK another small update before I go away on business again.
Side window in. Quarter window needs a little more but I'm still hunting for a good reference.
Spotted a flaw on the door in this render that'll need fixing also.
Anywho - here it is.
Early render of the rims. Still needs the central spinner and a couple of other details.

this very car that was finished in a red shade he came up with
boy it looked the part.

Thanks Ribbons. As you can see, it's been a while since my last update. Too much going on. Will try to get back to it soon.

Very nice work. I am also doing a 65 convertible but do not have any side or top drawings to go by. Where did you get your reference drawings? Would you share them with us?
I got the blues from http://www.vsrnonline.com/Mags/MC/MC_Plans.html
The reference I'm using is - http://www.vsrnonline.com/Mags/MC/Vol1/V1N3/MC_V1N3_p147.jpg
As you can see, this project has stalled a bit. I've been toying with the idea of getting it going again and your interest might just be the catalyst!!
Cheers

Man that is a sweet model, I don't know why you'd stop working on it.
