How to make hair and skin textures
1 Attachment(s)
Hi guys.
How on earth do you make proper hair and skin textures for your models. I have just played with it for hours now, and cant seem to come up with any good results. (dont mind the model, it is an old head, that i'm using for this practice). So if you have some tips, please let the rest of us know... |
I use a photo reference of skin and hair in Photoshop.
But large factors for realism is realistic lighting, layered sub-surface light scattering, etc. |
You could use paint fx for hair too...
|
I have never really got into paint fx. You any any good tuts ?
|
Here's one I used last year:

Very nice Kari.
Thanks for the direction.... ;-) Also thanks to you Mike. I will play with some photo reference as well. I see that the paint fx wont do on poly meshes. And due to the fact, that one cannot convert to sub-d if the poly count is over 1000, paint fx is not always an opportunity ??? Correct me if i am wrong... ? |
you can convert if over 1000. You just have to raise the polycount allowance number in the conversion options.

for hair i would use fur because of its dynamic capabilities, but it can slow down you scene so much
|
If you are going to make short hair in a special hairstyle, then I am sure you will find PFX and fur a bit annoying. Long hair and PFX is great. Fur is good for general fur like body fur on an animal, but not for hair on a human head if you ask me..
I would go for the old fashion way, by creating planes of low rez nurbs with textures on .. I made this : http://www.caligraphics.dk/Maya/hair/hair.htm its not the best explaining tut in the world, but I think you can figure out what I meen. also check this one out for some more visual explanation : http://www.kniffen.ca/tmp/he.jpg Good luck .. |
Wow... nice again Carsten.
I bet that this kind of placement of nurbs planes takes a lot of time. But youre right. It looks like its worth it. |
i paitn the face testures then overlay a leather texure and play w the opacity and effects to acheive a pores like look
|
well the best way is to to Unwrapping...and the use the texture that you treated in photoshop...u can paint it...or can use photographs... and about using fur as hair..
i encountered this problem so i thought tht i will post it here that i tried to apply the fur on a SUB D model. and it does'nt work and it gives an error...select either poly or nurbz surface....does'nt fur work on sub d-z???? |
and i forgot to mention that if you can get deep paint 3d....use it ...its really awesome tool...i have used it a bit and i m amazed by it...its veryyy good for texturing
