Passable Cloud
hi guys. i'm a newbie here at the forum. a friend of mine led me here and told me maybe you guys could help me in my little problem.
i haven't browsed yet the whole site so i don't know if my question has been tackled already. anyway, my problem is, how do i make a cloud (a simple one) using Particles. i've seen a lot of shader clouds and that's not what i want. i hope you guys could help me. :( |
If you don't need to use particles, you could try reading this thread:
http://forum.simplymaya.com/showthre...ghlight=clouds Otherwise, here's a way to do it with particles: http://3dtreat.com/pages/tutorials/C...age/index.html You could also read up on Fluids if you're using 4.5 or above. Unfortunately, it seems that one of the better resources for natural phenomenon type of effects, including clouds with particles, (mentioned in the first link's threads) is currently out of commission. |
Thanks again Nitro! (da cloud man! hehe..)
I have an updated link at home for that university Phenomenon course notes site, so I'll post that when I get home tonight. Also, at http://www.rustboy.com , he goes over his technique on how he created his puffy clouds in 2D, using a technique employed by us compositors called: "MultiPlaning". He needed to be able to fly through the clouds as well as a SUPER fast render time, so that's what he did:) Check it out, he's even got an animation to look at as well:) If you wanna see the animation, click here: http://www.rustboy.tv/movies/cloudlayers.htm |
Where's also a pretty good cloud tutorial over at AliasWavefront's how to section:
http://www.aliaswavefront.com/en/Tmp...ndering_m.html |
....which was already listed in the the initial thread I directed him to. ;)

Ewps, my bad, guys. That thread is from the VIP forums. You're not able to access them because you're not SM subscribers. No worries, though...it simply has the link that z1 posted, the one I posted using particles, and one that Rage will post here at some point that covers various natural phenomenon. As a general aside, clouds can be made using PaintFX or Fluids fairly easily, as well.

Thanks, NitroLiq. The second link was quite useful.I have another question in regards with the tutorial. I'm using a 4.5 version of Maya and the tutorial's been using only versin 3. Do I still have to place the MEL Script or the 4.5 version has that ability already?
|
I'm not really sure. It's not going to hurt to use the script either way so I would just go ahead and use it.
|
Well, the "other" link I had to the Dynamics Phenomenon site is ALSO down often:
http://cade.scope.edu/courseware/not...ena/index.html sorry... I also thought I had a local copy of it, but I'll just have to keep checking thier site, and when I get it to load, I'll copy it, and save it for us:) |
That would be great, ragecgi.
Btw, NitroLiq, I added the script and used it. Well, it worked. But the problem that I'm getting now is when I moved the Time Slider, the radius of the Particles return back to it's normal state. Does that script only work the cloud is on it's stationary state? O_O |
Thanks for checking, Rage. That's one of the URLs I had bookmarked....that and the actual I.P. address....neither apparently work right now. Hope they decide to put it back up.
Zeroboy, I think that the focus of the tutorial is to make one static cloud. The author mentions compositing in After Effects so the idea is probabaly to render out several clouds and composite them all in AE to give depth. Personally, I think it's the long way around. If you don't need to create them with particles, the tutorial z1 mentioned would be easier or like I said, Fluids would work great. There are several cloud preset examples you can use to get started. |
I've been checking that school site everyday, twice, and they still seem to be down...
I will keep trying to get it though.... |
The school's site is back up....whoohooo! :D
