kvo & dannygan - I use a mac too! But I use Maya primarily on the PC which is:

Athlon 1.2ghz T-Bird
512mb RAM
1 x 20gb HD
1 x 40gb HD
DVD drive
CDRW drive (external)
nVidia GeForce 4 Ti200 128mb GPU
Twin 17" Monitors
Windaz 2K SP3

Which works fine, although the dual monitors don't work as well on the PC as they do on my old Mac:

G4 Dual 500mhz
512mb RAM
1 x 20gb HD
1 x10gb HD
DVD dirve
CDRW drive (external)
Radeon 32mb GPU
17" Monitor
OSX 10.2.8

Bit tired now, but usable I wanna stick one of those Giga Designs accelerator cards in it - mind you that might make it blow up!

kvo
How does you Mac perform? Especialy the GPU? If I was gonna get new Mac I would get one of those - but they are so expensive...

rich 19-11-2003 02:06 PM

HP Pavailion ZT-1195 laptop

1.7GHz P4
512Mb Ram
40GB Maxtor HDD
15" LCD (1400x1200x32bit)
S3 Prosavage DDR 32Mb Graphics Card

Not a bad setup, runs Maya 5.0 PLE fine as long as I switch off the hardware acceleration on the Prosavage DDR card... necessary otherwise it crashes the system when when displaying maya color palettes.

Coming next month:

Dual AMD Athlon MP 2800+ (2.13Ghz)
Tyan Tiger MPX Bi-MP Motherboard
Quadro4 980 XGL g/fx card
Maxtor Diamondmax 200Gb HDD
2Gb (4x512mb) DDR PC2100 RAM
IIYAMA 21" LCD (1600x1280)

I'll be posting Cinebench results for both the machines (just for fun) and, if anyone is interested, a thread on how to build a PC with lots of nice piccies.

I'd be interested in seeing everyone elses Cinebench results - especially on those G5's and dual Operton systems).

roach105 19-11-2003 02:16 PM

I have a HW question.
How many people use Maxtor HD and for the ones that do how many Maxtor HD have crashed on you.

I have
60 gig maxtor (not working)
40 gig maxtor (not working)
20 gig maxtor (just went good bye)

the top two are newer than the 20 gig. The 20 gig is the one that has always been used as my c:\ directory. Anyways, just wanted to know if anyone else has had problems. I got the top two replaced but this is really annoying happening in the span of 5 months.

rich 19-11-2003 02:20 PM

I've always found Maxtor to be very reliable. Were you using all three drives in the same system? If so, and you had them mounted so that they were on top of each other, maybe you had an overheating problem.

roach105 19-11-2003 02:28 PM

No, two different systems. the 60 and 20 where installed on top of each other. Damn, maybe that was it.

orgeeizm 19-11-2003 06:11 PM

Ive had maxtor for almost 2 years on my main computer and ive had it sometimes running for weeks without turning it crashing. I think maxtor is pretty good..but i think it all depends on your setup..i also defragment daily so I guess that helps my drive? im not sure

first of all.. I dont trust anybody

I still have my 6 year old Maxtor rock solid and still working... on the other hand, 2 months ago I bought an 80Gig Maxtor and it didnt even last the 2 months...

I've had 3 HDDs die on me and let me tell you..the feeling is not good :(

and about the defragmenting, it doesnt help it as much as it keeps it running fast

-Emo

roach105 19-11-2003 09:26 PM

Emo my 20 gig just died on me and that was a 4 year old drive. my 40 and 60 where not even a year put together.

orgeeizm 20-11-2003 07:26 AM

Emo, like i said its different for people..defragmenting helps my win file system stay alive and i notice it through the "sounds" my harddrive makes when it accesses lots of files...

anyway, that same HD of mine crashed february earlier this year and i lost my work since i got it. still dont know the reason why it did. all i know is that windows froze up when i was booting it. and when i booted back, everything was corrupted, partitions were gone

carrot juice 21-11-2003 03:10 AM

As long as we're creeping away from the original topic...

If you had unlimitied cash, you could use one of those new 64 bit or whatever processors and have 8 gigs of ram, about 6 GHz of processing power (dual 3GHz) and like a 600 GB harddrive... drool...

EDIT: oh, and not to mention an NVidia Quadro FX 3000...

dave_baer 21-11-2003 11:01 AM

carrot juice: If you had unlimited cash and that's all you can come up with, then you think too small. :D

Emo: defragmenting your HD definitley helps it work faster. While it's not a major factor, it does reduce the seek time the head requires to find parts of files that have been "fragmented". If you have never defragged. I would strongly suggest you do.

My setup's ok. I could use a better graphics card, but other than that, works fine for me.

parttimer 30-11-2003 04:46 PM

I have a Dell Dimension 8200, which came with a 60Gb maxtor drive. After I had the machine for 13 months I started it up one day to get a message along the lines of - 'Dell monitoring reports that HD 1 is operating outside of normal specifications. Backup all your data and call Dell support immediatly ...' I called Dell and they said it needed replacing, and that the warranty ran out after the first year.

I bought a new HD and installed it, but kept the maxtor as a second HD. I still get the same error message about half the time when booting, but the drive still works fine, I just don't keep anything important on it. Sometimes I do wonder tho, how odd the error message started just 3 weeks after the Dell waranty ended!

Re tech specs -

Dell Dimension with P4 2.4ghz
1 Gig rambus ram
80 Gig Western Digital drive with 8Mb buffer (works great)
60 Maxtor HD
Sapphire Radion 9600 Pro 128 Mb
19 Inch Dell monitor (trinitron)
Logitech MX 700 optical mouse

I have only been using Maya for a few weeks, but it seems smooth so far.

slickrenderer 19-12-2003 09:03 AM

After Dell gets there order they check the warranty yoo bought. It goes like this-

1year warranty - They drop the drive 10 times on concrete floor before putting it in the machine.

3year warranty- They drop it once on carpeted floor :-)

392mg RAM
20GB HD
Nvidia Gforce 4MX 64mg
SoundBlaster Live!
Win 2000 pro

I plan on upgrading my video card, then proccessor, and then ram, after getting a new mobo :) Maybe it'll be cheaper just to sell my comp and build a new one again? When i got this comp, it was great for its time but that was before I was into 3d

Amiga with the all mighty 1 meg upgrade ;)

jsprogg 20-02-2004 04:25 AM

ok I built this about 6 months ago ..I am running a P4 2.8 GHz with HyperThreading on an Intel D865GBF mobo,
1024 DDR Ram and 160GB hard drive.
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra graphics card which is probably the weakest link..might upgrade this soon.
Hansol H530 [Monitor]
Creative Audigy 2 sound card
NEC DVD_RW ND-1300A
PLEXTOR CD-RW PX-W5224A
TEAC DV-516E [DVD-ROM drive]

Running Maya 5.01 and it's sweet except for the nvidia viewport problem but it's a minor annoyance.

I upgraded the vga to a Leadtek Nvida FX 5950 ultra and added some more Ram ..now got 1500mb DDR RAM :)
nvidia have finally sorted the viewport issue...the system rocks now :)

Hanuman 27-02-2004 01:12 PM

just upgraded my system to:
Asus PC-DL Deluxe dual processor motherboard
two Intel Xeon 2.4 Ghz
2 GB of RAM
nVidia Quadro4 980 XGL graphics card
Matrox SATA 250 GB Hard Disk

compared to the system i was using before, this gets 10 from me

vedic kings 14-03-2004 09:55 AM

Hi,

I just got a new computer 2 days ago.

I don't know that much about pc, and I wanted somthing fast, well faster then my mac G4.

So I had a friend build me a pc, and I told him I wanted a fast one! Because it take waaay to long to render on my mac.

So as far as I can see looking through my computer and stuff, this is what I have.

AMD Athlon XP 2600+ Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, Version: 5.0.2195 Service Pack 4 Build 2195
System Name: SoNATA1
System Manufacturer: NVIDIA
System Model: AWRADACPI
System Type: x86-based PC
Processor: x86 Family 6 Model 10 Stepping 0 AuthenticAMD ~ 16...
BIOS Version: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
NVIDIA nForce K7N2G Series. I'm not sure about what this is, a graphic card maybe?
1,048,048 KB RAM. I guess that my membery?

I really don't know what the hell any of this stuff means! But I can tell you this, this pc is waaaaayyyy better then my mac! Rendering rocks!

vedic kings 15-03-2004 11:50 PM

Ok now I know what I have now,

It an Athalon 2800 xp 32 bit processor,
Radeon 9200 series graphic card
1G of ram
ViewSonic G790 19" monitor

I give this computer a "10" compare to the mac G4, rendering is very fast!

magget78 16-03-2004 06:20 AM

I have a AMD dual processor Opteron 242,
1 gig ram,
80 gig hd,
Nvidia Quadro 1000 FX video card,
17inch lcd screen,
4x pioneer dvd burner

I would say this is the ultimate system. Not the best but wayyyy up their, just ran outta money!

Maya runs like a charm..

RROOOOOOM RRROOOOOOM RRRROOOOOOM.........

Well I have finally upgraded to a certain degree that is...
I now have...
PIV-2.8 800FSB with HT
512 DDR 400 RAM
ASUS Muthabrd.

The rest of the other specs are the same. When i get a bit more cash i will continue to upgrade.

AspectSEQLD 19-03-2004 12:55 PM

hmmm.

P4 3.0 (800fsb)
Asus P4P800 dlx mobo
160GB SATA
2 GB Corsair TwinX DDR 400
Asus 256MB nVidia fx5950

its not bad, but it has issues with z-buffer, which is REALLY annoying, because my older machine with a Geforce4 card doesnt have the problem :( GRRRRRR

but for rendering, it screams... so word-up

lol

ayelar 03-04-2004 09:05 PM

Heh, if I had my way, I'd have a workstation like chrisdude's. :) However, since I'm using the school's computers and they're all donated, I've got some kind of Dell sitting on my desk. It's all right, probably about ready for an upgrade.

I do, however, get to use the 128-processor render farm here. So it's worth this Windows nightmare, I guess. ;)

wicket 05-04-2004 12:51 AM

Bingbiggen 06-04-2004 01:07 AM
