Feb-March challenge: Virtual Cityscape

Virtual Cityscape

I've been playing Sim City 4 lately (after being completely disapointed with Sim City Societies) and thought that maybe it'd make an interesting theme for a challenge.

So, thinking along those lines, how about an environment challenge? Build a city! Haha, just kidding. But how about building an interesting building? Or a huge suspension bridge over water? Or a Ferry Terminal with a great big commuter ferry pulling into dock?

Or maybe go simpler. A bus stop? A peaceful city park? A water tower?

Check out some of these Sim City 4 screenshots to get your motor running:

A couple guides:

1) It doesn't have to be pretty. Feel free to do a slum lord's crappy apartment building. :)

2) Modeling and Texturing are required.

3) You can be super-duper-high-res or do low-poly game models... your choice!

4) Name your threads something like Virtual Cityscape Challenge: Baseball Field (challenge name: your entry title)

Feel free to ask any questions in this thread. No prizes I'm afraid... But you'll get a nifty medal for getting 1st, 2nd, or 3rd! We can even go crazy with categories if you guys want: Most Creative, Most Realistic, etc. Depends on if we get enough entries, though, I imagine.

UPDATE:

Just thought of a cool idea. If we get enough people, we can put all the entries together in one render and have our own little SM city. :) If enough finish, I'll take care of it!

Deadline Noon April 1st (USA Pacific Time)! No, it's not a joke. :)

alexanderH 29-01-2009 07:34 PM

ohh hell yes!
I am definitely in this one.
Sweet theme hombre.

honestdom 29-01-2009 08:11 PM

yeah sounds cool, i'm in.

Rhetoric Camel 29-01-2009 10:42 PM

you've been playing a lot of sim city 4 also huh? Thought I was the only one obsessed with it recently. Good idea for a challenge I might join in on this one

oh and is your deadline a joke or is it really on april fools day? haha, had to ask.

tweetytunes 29-01-2009 11:17 PM

I`m in - not done an environment for awhile now.

Joopson 30-01-2009 12:36 AM

I think I am in!

THX1138 31-01-2009 12:42 AM

Mike, can it be photo real or does it have to look like Sim City graphics?

I would guess it's up to you from what rule 3 is

"3) You can be super-duper-high-res or do low-poly game models... your choice!"

THX1138 31-01-2009 12:55 AM

I wasn't under the impression that hi-res meant photo real. I have seen low res look photo real when textured and rendered properly.

mtmckinley 31-01-2009 02:09 AM

you can have eleventy-billion polys if you want. Although I wouldn't recommend it.

Sim City 4 graphics, by the way, are a combination of sprites and 3D models. All of the buildings and citizens are sprites while all the vehicles are low poly 3D models.

honestdom 31-01-2009 08:51 AM

only sim city 4 style graphics!?

....ok, i quit. :(

mtmckinley 31-01-2009 09:47 AM

uh, no... do whatever you want. Doesn't have to be like Sim City at all. I was just adding to the conversation.

honestdom 31-01-2009 10:15 AM

ah, sorry about that... i'm in again

Hiraghm 03-02-2009 05:52 AM

Can you make a collection of buildings as an evironment? Like a village, or a shopping center?

03-02-2009 07:17 AM

deadline april 1st? a little long, no?

either way, im in if i can get some free time:ninja:

mtmckinley 03-02-2009 12:41 PM

Hiraghm - sure!

Hiraghm 03-02-2009 05:16 PM

Okay, I'll give it a try if I can.

Last contest I tried entering was the game character contest 4+ years ago. I've been planning on finishing them up "real soon now" :attn:

Hiraghm 03-02-2009 05:50 PM

Uhm... is it okay if I use Lightwave?

mtmckinley 03-02-2009 06:33 PM

yep

Hiraghm 04-02-2009 12:20 AM

Do I post my updates here or over on SimplyLightwave?

mtmckinley 04-02-2009 01:48 AM

I'd prefer you keep 'em here, but you can post at both if you'd like.

am in

Perfecto 05-02-2009 05:34 PM

LOL, I might download the Maya trial version just to partake in this challenge as I love modeling scenes like this. Great challenge Idea.

mtmckinley 17-02-2009 09:47 PM

Hope to see more updates soon!

Virtual Cityscape Challenge: Foggy Street

Ok this is scary

This is my first attemp at showing anything to anyone bar my wife so here it goes :(

I am happy for CC and if we change our scene before the close date is that all good :)

ok i got my thread up

23-02-2009 04:59 PM

^ looks good but you should start your own thread for it:beer:

Henhrig666 23-02-2009 09:28 PM

oops sorry, can i change it now that i have posted it :headbang:

Rhetoric Camel 23-02-2009 11:13 PM

yes you need your own thread, a brand new project in which you show all your progress, just posting an image of a finished scene how do we know you didn't take it from somewhere? not saying that you did, but you need to show your work in your thread.

Henhrig666 24-02-2009 07:50 AM

Can i move my post to a new thread or is it there to stay now? and i can post wires and other images and the maya files if you want me to or if i need to sorry first thing ive entered so dont know the protocol :(

honestdom 24-02-2009 08:50 AM

hey man, welcome to simplymaya!

What you should do is start a thread called something like "Henhrig666 - Virtual Cityscape - (then whatever your cityscape is)" and repost your render.
Hope you enjoy the comp!

...i should really get started myself but i've been so busy trying to get a job in 3D i've not had any free time. :(

Perfecto 01-03-2009 02:31 PM

I was thinking today was the last day of the comp, but realized I was wrong when I didn't see any finals being posted. I'll join the competition.

Dango77 03-03-2009 08:21 PM

I am loving this challenge! Sod not having any prizes, would be nice but not really important, it's just so fun to be given a project to do without having to think of one myself.
I just wish a few more people were taking part, hopefully there will be some more late comers like myself. Good luck to all that are in it!

Maya & HOUDINI

Can i use HOUDINI to Ambient oscillation rendering because i don't know how to do it in maya.If i do it in houdini the a watermark will be added.(because of the apprentice version)

My question is can i use houdini in this contest?

mtmckinley 11-03-2009 08:38 PM

there is no restrictions regarding applications that can be used

Dango77 11-03-2009 10:47 PM

Hi mtmckinly, loving this challenge, i'm relly learning a lot from doing it and getting to meet some cool people! Just a quick question, when we submit our final pieces, what file size etc will we be able to upload, and will there be any specific criteria, ie: one main pic, or one main and a couple of close ups.... Either way I'm just glad to be part of it, keep up the great work you're all doing at the site!

Dango77 29-03-2009 09:54 AM

Just a quick question, do we post our final pieces in our own thread, or will there be a separate thread for them?

gster123 29-03-2009 12:38 PM

Theres usually a separate thread thats opened for the final images close to the time the comp finishes, you pose em in there.

iamcreasy 29-03-2009 01:22 PM

can the time could be extended!!

Dango77 29-03-2009 09:40 PM

Cheers gster,I'll await a thread to open up then.

tweetytunes 07-04-2009 11:35 PM

I don`t know if its got anything to do with how bad the the british economy is but how come 3/4 entries so far are from the uk hehe.

Just had another idea for the next one - "famous vehicle" - basically any car, bus, van, tank, space ship from a tv show or film.
