knew it had to be something really simple that i was doing wrong - the only light i had in the scene was an ambient light, which gives no shadows!!!

The File attributes of the texture controlling the amount of bump is set to Quadratic. Is this right or...

bump value 1, bump depth 4, bump filter 0.099, bump offset 0.0

Is there an way of turning off the bump map in the render dialogue box by mistake?
