how to 'uncombine' polygons

How can a divide the head from the rest of my model? I am sure there is an easy way to do it but I cant find it (shame on me). Even search in the forums dont give me much :-S

I have tried to separate without much success.. I am probably using it the wrong way.

Thanks!

Select the faces, edit polygons > extract.

Not necessarily true. If there are objects combined together that have not been merged together, edit polygons > seperate will still seperate them whether or not the combine history is still in place.

ok, but if the history has been deleted, vertex merged and both part combined? there must be a way to separate this head, no?
