Can't deactivate the poly cage.

When modeling with polygons, and I smooth the mesh, I get that big green boxy cage around the object, does it really need to be there, can I turn it off. It's very distracting to me. While I'm at it, can you turn off the dots that sit at the middle of every poly face, that's distracting as well. If I have to live with them I'll learn to not see them, but if there is an option to turn them off I'd love to know about it.

I might have figured out turning off the cage, just pressing '3' seems to make it disappear. Excuse my newbiness.

Thanks. Is there a way to select faces on an object in the perspective viewport without having faces on the opposite side of the object also being selected?
