how do you set it off so that it actually produces a good result?

What I usually do is just turn on the "Include Edges" under the Edge option in the Render Globals. Its in the "Maya Vector" tab. That usually come out quite nice. Just try playing with random options. Figure out what does what. Thats what got me started.
