Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

Extrudable polygon with holes

I am trying something simple in maya that is a breeze to do in max, but maya is failing terribly.

Ok, I'm trying to make a wall of an old farm house. Nothing fancy here, imagine a square with a triangle on top. Now the square and the triangle are a single polygon. Ok, now I want to put a small square in the middle of this single shape and have that square be a hole where a window will be in my simple wall.

So I use the the create polygon tool and define the outline, by X-Clicking in a clockwise fashion. Now The last point resides on the first point. Instead of hitting enter to close the polygon, I CTRL-CLick to define the little square, but wait , for some reason, maya won't let me use a square, it can only do triangles? What's up with that?

In 3DS Max, I can define my two shapes, and attach them. Then when I do an extrude, the shapes that are inside the larger shape becomes holes. I want that in maya, can anyone tell me how to do that in the simplest way possible. Mainly I need simplicity because I am turning the technique directly into MEL script.

Thanks

im confused by what you mean the square and triangles being on top thing, can post a screen shot? preferabbly 2 screenshots containing the beginning and end result of what you wanted to do. you can even make it a MAX screenshot so we can see it working. thanks

Here's a pretty quick way of doing this.

1. Make your 5 side poly in the shape you're wanting.
2. make a cube in the shape of your window you want cut out.
3. Select the wall, then select the cube, and go to Polygons-->Booleans-->Difference

*tip* if you delete the back face of the cube, you won't get that solid window like i've got there. and also by adjusting how far the cube extends beyond the wall you determine that extruded window edge.

no solution

hey how you doing, i know exactly what you mean and sorry to say, but i haven't YET found any solution similiar to max's. if there's one thing, (in my opinion) max destroys maya in architectural modeling. if you or anyone can show me a quick way to do this type of modeling, it would be soooooooo sweet. boolean is nice, but it's completely too slow and way too many steps compared to a spline and extrude.
