I'm pretty new to maya so any input would be great. I've tried working with the normals buti don't have much luck.

the car is modeld completely in polygons. I haven't ventrued much into nurbs yet.

It's a bit hard to see in that lighting. Could we see a nice bright render or screen grab?

I've started playing with the color

Played around with the color a little bit more and added a sky to the camera. I would like to make the car smoother does anyone have any ideas on how to go about doing that?

If it's Polys, change it to Sub-D's. That will smooth it out. Then you can reconvert it back to Poly's if ya want.
