Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Jay- Verts where 5 or even 6 polys come together ... do you make an effort to keep them to a minimum? Or do you find their effect on smoothing and/or deformations tolerable? From what I have read I scramble like a turtle on his back whenever I get a 6 pointed vert! In your opinion, should I be so concerned?

Model is lookin top shelf! I always love seeing the twist in the forearm modeled in there (radius and ulna). Nice, dude!

6 sided poly is a definite no mate.

5 sided - yeah this is still an issue with me although, its okay to do. I've asked Steve Stahlberg about this as I was concerned about 5's arising on a Head models' cheek and therefore what would happen with the deformation? Stahlberg said he didnt have any probs with it and showed me some examples of his character with some seriously cool facial expressions/shapes. So...

But saying this, personally I wouldnt go crazy with 5's especially around deformable areas, just incase it gives you hassle on the rig, but if its in the right place and the edge/vert is terminated correctly then do it, but keep them to a minimum. But bear in mind if you are doing Subs to poly then it will convert to a four sided at the end anyway and just for good measure when you render, Maya tessellates again to tri's!
Francisco Cortina did those Final Fantasy characters with a few 5's but they were terminated in the right places.

Impressive and clearly too close to my wife's breast and but that i got to react hehehehe :attn:

As you wouldn't like some bad explanation on some particular point, here's my visual feeling. Pink is your edge. I would lower it, coplanar with hand's palm I mean.

I should have even set the soft curved edge as you almost did initialy, along the finger (index in english too ?), but more down than up.

Apart from that, and after staring at this amazing piece, i'll go and see my real one now user added image

Thanks for you crit. I spent a while on that area and seeing it today the pink line needs moving down to create that extra crease along there. I have a ton of reference for that area as the skin is almost 'web' like between the thumb and finger and not smooth.
