Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Good work lewisears - as others have said - lots of great detail - I particularly like the balloon like structure in the last shot. It's interesting that you have taken your dad's drawings and modelled them in maya. What does he think of your work?

Do you have any concepts?

Kind of hard to tell what the house is supposed to look like.

I gotta say I love it so far and it would make an awesome setting for a short film. One crit though. I noticed that the right tower has no stairs, just a room above a room with no way up. I probably wouldnt have noticed if the top room wasn't so blank compared to the detail of the rest of the piece.

What I lack in skill I make up for with enthusiasm.

Hi Everyone, thanks again for your comments, I have attached the original 2D concept for you to look at and compare to my model, as i have said in previous posts there is still modelling to be done (such as the clown in the right tower) and parts of the model are due to be replaced, Let me know your comments on the concept and let me know whether you think my model is doing the drawing justice, lots of crits and coms wanted and needed please! thanks.

Holy Cow!

that is an awesome drawing. I can see how you would be inspired to make this in 3D. I think I would have started working on this and said. . ."OMG, this is going to drive me to drinking"

On to some critiques.

The differences I immediately noticed from your model and the drawing is the squareness (is that a word?) of your model and the smooth flow of the drawing. Take a look at the doorways and stones on the drawing and then look at your model. While your model is well done, it just doesnt have the same "Other World" feel to it. The bricks and stones are random and your model they are very symmetrical. And the arches on your World balloon seem a bit off as they have some stone/bricks that the drawing does not.

Also some of the gear wheels just don't seem to be as "sturdy" as in the drawing. Notice how the main wheels/gears have thick support beams, your model could use some of that strength those bring to the image.

It is possible that once textured, your model will breath the same life the drawing does. You are doing a great job and this crit is in no way a dis. Hopefully I help you look with new eyes to make this a truely kick ass one of a kind.

Hi, thanks for the crits, its always good to have a fresh eye!, regarding the symetricality of the bricks, there jus cubes at the moment and there all gonna go....they are gonna be replaced by full textured walls with more random bricks that are true to the drawing, there is quite a few peices in the model that are gonna be replaced and they where put in there almost as a template. notice the current lack of statues and stuff, i felt it was important to complete the bulk of the environment before slowing my computer down with the heavy detail....but rest assured it will be there....Thanks again and keep the comments commin!
