HAHA...uhhh, if you want realism you have to use something that will reflect the stuff around it. Soo...if you dont use mental ray and dgs then I am not sure how real it is going to work...please dont kill me.

All right, I am still working on writing this tutorial...but I made a phong layered texture to make a dirty looking metal with scratches on it. I then added an image based lighting scheme (hdri), and rendered it under mental ray...

If this is something you want just give me a little time to finish up the tutorial.

dgs materials do work, It must be you doing something wrong for it not to render.

Have you tried downloading a shader from highend3d, they have quite a few that are free so you can see how its created.

Those tutorials work, that is how I learned how to make them...

But dont worry, I finished up my tutorial which makes a great looking metal material without dgs materials...

Its not posted yet, but if you PM me your email I can email it to ya.

if you're using a dgs material you have to make sure you're rendering with mental ray and not maya's software renderer...

if you render and you're getting nothing but black you're using software render... and since dgs is a mental ray material you're not going to get anything.

When I finally figured out how to get the "create mental ray nodes" thing available (which, by the way, I forgot) the dgs, dialectric, etc etc.... that shit don't work!!!!!!!!!!! I rendered using mental ray ( least I go into render setting and click render using>mental ray and it was all black and matted)

Check this thread, when I rendered the first few shots of the robot it was all DGS. Basically took that gear tutorial and applied it to my model...so that is what it should look like.
