Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

This guy's reflection won't go away!

I'm trying to have a guy walk into a room and as he gets closer to the window the camera is pointed at, his reflection slowly appears as he moves in. In my light linking, nearly nothing is touching him, and looking directly at him you can't see a thing, yet his reflection is bright as day. My cut-corners-teacher of course suggestions just key framing the transparency of all the materials that make up the walking man. Not exactly the effect I'm going for but gets the point across. STILL showing up in the window, yet completely invisible when looking at him. What is the deal!

Well, I guess if you don't want to reflect anything else in the window you could kill the reflectivity for the material that it's made out of. The light that's illuminating him is probably being reflected off the window onto him, whereupon it bounces back and gives you that oh-so-nasty reflection..

Just a thought anyway.

cant you just go into the AE and turn off 'receive reflections' for that material?? In AE/'display' I think.?? somewhere there, your teacher isn't cutting corners but making life harder??

take it easy and life will be easy

either way i'd still like to see an image so i further understand the explanation of the problem.

If I souldent get round it in maya (Think that you can, but i'm a bit uncirtian as to the problem, think you should keyframe the reflectivity of the window myself) I wouldrenderit out on sepperate layers and deal with it in the composition phase.
