Normals Correction

Why are my normals pointing out at perpendicular angles? And originating from nothing? It's affecting how the border edge extrudes. Is there anything I can do to correct it? user added image

You might have duplicate faces there or something, try cleaning up the geometry, or merging stuff down.

Thanks. I didn't notice the multiple vertices on the border edge bunched up together
