Hedgehog spikes, can Maya Fur be used?

Some project I'm trying to have a go at involves creating a hedgehog. The model will not be animated.
What could I do about the spikes? So far fur seems easy to apply to the rest of the body, because there are plenty of fur types that could work for this. It's the spikes I'm worried about. Should I just model 1 spike and copy it? Or should I use the fur to simulate spikes? If so, which type of fur would be ideal?

The porcupine hair just doesn't cut it.
