Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

the program just generates blocks, planes etc. and saves as DXF format.

There is a lego CAD program available but not sure how to get it. has a massive library of there blocks and can be converted to DXF.

Hey all! I'm new here, been lurking so far but I decided to come out of hiding to help. The program I think you're looking for is LDraw. I've used it before and it's pretty cool, though I never managed to export anything into a different program, so I can't help there.

Edit: Woah! Sorry about this, didn't know I was a necromancer, last post here was in 2003... user added image

wow that lego stuff is pretty tight

I don't know, but the fact that it is a bit blurry and dark just ads on to how good the model is!
Great renders, and it must have taken you mounds of patience to do that! Keep up the good work!!!!

Brian used to use the "GI_Joe" script which simulates global illumination (sets up a dome of lights around the model)....search the forums for more info on it or google if you want to find the script. There are loads of old threads on it in the lighting/rendering forum.

You could also read up and use global illumination rendering with mental ray.

Probably that it's hard for Brian to explain his light setup when he hasn't been seen around here for some time.
