Poly head model...

I've put about 40 hours into this project so far, which includes this head, his body(with clothes), and the scene to animate him into. This is my first poly head, or my first time modeling/animating anything in maya, which I have had for a couple of months.

The nurbs planes that show the hair will be replaced with paintFX hair*****

after more retouching, and perfecting the head as much as possible, I modeled the ear..which was really tricky if you've never done one before like me :o

I will have pictures of my scene when its finished, which may take some time... If anyone is good with UV mapping, it would be great if you could help me with it for this model, I just need some pointing in the right direction.

pm me if you can

For UV mapping, you could get DannyTools, which is a great little pluggin that makes UV mapping easy and colourfull.

As for teh head, its looking great.

hi scrpat317, i just wanna say thats a pretty damn good head. so youve only been using maya for a couple of months? thats really good! ive tried making heads but had bad success. but i havent tried in awhile. though I have made alot of observations and i would just like to point out some parts:

1) the eyelids are kinda too sharp edged..but then again maybe you will add some eyelashes so you wont really see that.

2) i see alot of 5 sided polys that i guess are acceptable but since you are animating it, its better to keep it to quads or tri's. quads are more preferred of course.

3) the lips are kinda a bit too womanly for a man. i dont know how to explain it..but i guess look in the mirror but dont just look straight at your lips, bend your head down a bit and twist it left and right as well to look at it from different view. But then again, maybe the lips that you are using as reference are like that.

4) cheeks look abit flat (not really) but i guess they need more form. maybe again the reference youre using has flattish cheeks.

Everything else I think are pretty good. I like the nose, it looks perfect. Just that try to reduce polys. Im sure you can get that same look with less polys.

Great job man! Keep updating I would like to see your progress so I can learn from you before I tackle head modeling. Cya!

Not bad for a first head. You'll find that each successive head you do, you improve. user added image Do you use reference images? I'd recomend it, if you do not.

thanks for the comments guys!

The reason I have some 5 sided poly's is because I wanted to get greater detail in some places without getting detailed in other places. I chose 5 sided poly's over 3 sided poly's to make the conversion, because when I convert to subD's you get some lines with triangles . You can see this when you look at my subD model smoothed, the sideds of the mouth have a line on each side..which I'm not really happy with
