Default objects switching to wire frame

Hello,
I'm practicing my modeling technique. I'm creating a simple polygon of a chair. I just finished the back part of the chair and created a color for the frame and cushion. I then combined the two polygons. But when I convert polygon to subdiv I loose the colors I gave each polygon and the entire object converts to a wire frame. Also, I can't replace the color that I lost. Is there a setting that needs to be adjusted?
