Crystals - How?

How do you actually create crystals in Maya? Please
I looked for tutorials around but found nothing.

That would be really great to learn how to create a scene like this one attached.
Even if that's just a single crystal then replicate the rest.

Thank you.

That screwdriver tutorial teaches some seriously bad habits, booleans and no cleanup and cranking up render settings with no rhyme or reason and still getting a low quality image. The modeling tut ND posted makes sense, avoid that screw driver one, you're better off beveling some poly cylinders than doing that.

Then you should see the models I have seen used in film Gen...starships and the like, done in LW and NO cleanups...none.

Hi Gen,

Thank you for your view buddy. That's always good to know.

I was thinking more on the lines of using the modeling technique from the link provided by ND and use the shader method for the screwdriver. For some reasons I never had the need to use booleans and never really liked it due to the unnecessary high polycount at the end.

Getting my hands dirty Tonight, so let's see how it goes.
I'm trying to create a world to fit my character I finished modeling the other day.
For uncountable times, I'm trying to create my own 20 secs 3D short and understanding the basic pipeline.
So, at least I finished modeling, texturing, uv, etc etc this new character. user added image
Now, let's build a world for this little guy here.

Just checked your site, very good info there. Basic and straight to the points the FAQ section. Good job mate. Bookmarked for reference.

I actually used this image from Ben10 Cartoons as my main reference.

there is a paint effects brush for crystal, you will need to convert it to a mesh then change the material

https://mentalraytips.blogspot.cz/200...monds-and.html

that should get you started on the material it's for max but it's pretty easy to apply the same thing in Maya

here same paint effects brush tweaked the material. Really did not have any time to tweak it more but i'm sure you'll have it looking better in no time at all user added image
