non linear bends?

Hey all,

I just needed some advice. I want to make a mousetrap, nothing too crazy of course, since I'm a newbie user added image. I did a helix for the spring, and it was ok, but I couldnt manipulate(add enough coils) because when I tinkered with the various settings it went nuts! So I wound up scaling with the scale tool..

My question however is how do I make that bended wire, the U shape bends? Do I take a simple cylinder and bend it from the center and then stretch it out? I've tried the non linear>bend tool with all sorts of settings but I just get a mess and no pretty bend.

Any ideas?
