Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.
Select all the edges of the length of the cylinder (not the caps), Edit Polygons > Subdivide. Select the new ring of vertices, move them down to the face's level. Split poly around the new vertices. Delete unwanted faces.
