help with curves on surface

im a noob right now to maya.. previously worked with 3D studio max and Rhinoceros 3D. I looked up a tutorial on making a car and it seems rather simple to me.. all except one part.. Making a curve on a surface... Now in the directions the person makes a curve on a surface but doesn't say how so im a bit stuck. In the beginning I started off with a simple flat plane polygon from create-->polygon-->plane and extruded edges from there and moved points and such. so I have the entire side of the car finished. Now I need to draw a curve on top to start making the roof of the car.... Now im wondering if this person started with Nurbs plane or polygon because from googling... I see nothing about curve to surface with anything but Nurbs.. So if this is true... can I convert to Nurbs easily? No big deal if I have to do it over again.. its good practice. Here is a link to the tutorial.. I am currently on this page where you draw a curve up top.

That is the beginning... at the bottom is the links to the pages and im on page 3...
