select your mentalrayIbl1, and under render stats (in the attribute editor) try unchecking 'primary visibility'... that seems to work for me.

yeah that completely makes the geometry transparant but throughout the whole animation. It needs to just turn off the hdri reflections

Edit: Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place, where is this mentalrayIbl1? Could you show me a screen grab if poss

it's actually the globe that the hdri image is attached to...

it surrounds the scene.

then i left everything pretty much default but i unchecked primary visibility...

I think you may have misunderstood whats my problem is.

I have a piece of geometry which is hdr lit, inside the sphere also is some text though i want this text to be completely transparant which it isn't because the hdr reflections or something is keeping it partially lit, i want to turn off the hdr effects/ influences on the text whilst still keeping the other geometry hdr lit.

the problem isn't that you're getting reflections in your text object, it's that it's showing what would be behind your object in the IBL sphere...

only other thing i can think of is that i've got the reflections turned down to 0.000 on my object, but i don't think it's related to this problem.

Couldent you render the object/ text from different files (with settings to suit) then just composite it in post production???

Would be the easiest way to me?

I was thinking that, though I wouldn't have the first clue on how to start, I initially presumed it wouldn't be hard to fade some geometry, how wrong I was :headbang:

Just render the different things (text, geo, background) sepperate then just use the opacity channel in your compositing software to fade it out.

Would that work or am I missing the point?

i wouldnt know gster, I have never composited anything before nor do i have the software. I really am surprised at how not straight forward it is to do it in one scene user added image

have you tried using light linking?

under the render menu go to lighting/shading, then light linking, then light-centric... from there, select your mentalrayIbl on the left, and then deselect your text from the right (and the material that's attached to it as well, just to be safe)

only thing is that you'll have to create separate lights for your text... and then you'll have to make sure the light for your text isn't linked to any other objects...

Have a look for Jahshka, its a free compositing and editing sofrware (I found the name of this in 3d world) might help you out??
