My first model try

Hey guys!
I've had Maya for some time now and haven't really put any effort into learning it, but now that's changed!
I've got some time over and I really want to use it to learn more about Maya modelling!

So, I started my first little project, which is to model a coffee-cup!
I don't think I'll have to show any photos of the original cup, it's a very simple one.

I've made the cup, and is working on the hold. It's a catastrophe! user added image

Here are some screens of it, and I would really like some tips on how to make the hold! As you can see, it's really bad!

Okay, go hard on me! I'll have to learn something!
I've got some DVD's yes, but I won't try them until I've got the hold of some tools and techniques!

Add some divisions to the handle, either by adding isoparms if its a nurbs surface or by using 'cut faces tool' (i think thats what its called anyway) if its polys.

I was trying to add isoperms earlier, but now I realise it's a polygon object! :blush:

I'll try the cut faces tool!

Just use the insert edge loop tool, its a lot faster than cutting the faces to make the edges.

the insert edge loops lets u place it inbetween the other two edges if u want. Go to the option box and in the Attribute editor there are a few options. You can also insert multiple edge loops between two edges that are evenly spaced.

Hmm.. I have deleted the hold several times now, and I can't get a good way to create it... any tips on what to use? I've used a cylinder that I've turned and rotated, but I never get a result close to the real thing.

Can I use curves in any way?

funny you should mention that.., very good guess.., definitely in the bal park there mate

check the maya help files for path extrusion (along curves) and you will run in winning

or bend deformers

many ways to kill a cat (if thats the correct term) in maya user added image

I tried a render from my companies Maxwell I could use... Does anyone know why it's supergrainy? ^^

If you wait some hours more the grain disappears...

longer render time = less image noise

I know im not ready for rendering, but it can always be cool to actually see what can be made, from what I've done.. I'll increase the render time!

you might want to thicken up that handle though - it's looking a bit thin.

The handle is really very thin, but quite wide! No problem in real, so it will stay that way!

I made a new render of it! Simple though, I don't know anything else! I'm going to start on a DVD-tutorial now! =)
