Help--Why is "scale tool" so wide?

user added image

hi, Sometimes when i work in maya, my scale tools and other tools stretches too far out and i can't grab the end points. Like in the picture i have above, the scale tool is far too wide and goes off my perspective view and i can't grab onto the end points to scale my curves.

Can any tell me why this is happening and how i can fix this problem. much THanks!
