from what i see, a ramp shader would be perfect if you're trying to texture the individual 'squares' of the turtle's shell... heck if that was the case you might even be able to place the UVs of each square over each other to save texturing space... sounds good in a reply anyway user added image

Thanks for the advice will try that out and hopefully give everyone an update on the texture.
